LETTERS, Page 12Armenians and Azerbaijanis
It would be a cruel irony if the hostilities being carried on
between the Soviet republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan should lead
to the downfall of Mikhail Gorbachev (WORLD, Oct. 23). Their
strife may eventually bring a halt to glasnost by the irresponsible
and unthinking exercise by their peoples of newfound, but evidently
misunderstood, freedom.
Peter S. Darling

I find Paul Hofheinz's article "On the Edge of Civil War,"
describing the relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, heavily
one-sided. Reading his account, one concludes that the Armenians
are the unquestionable oppressors in this tragic feud. Journalistic
ethics should insure the reader against such distorted accounts.
